Meet Nynne, a coder with a Masters in the Arts who now works in tech, thanks to opportunities that came along with her involvement with open learners’ communities. She encourages tech managers to hire more juniors, to overcome diversity gap.
Hi Nynne! Tell us about what you do and who you are.
My name is Nynne, I come from just outside of Copenhagen, have been living in Germany and the US for a number of years and recently relocated back here. My professional and academic background is quite multidisciplinary. I have a bachelors degree in European Ethnology from the University of Copenhagen and a masters degree in Decorative Arts Design History Material Culture from Bard Graduate Center in New York. Most recently, I have been working as a researcher in the art history department at Humboldt University in Berlin. I have worked with software in different capacities for last couple of years; as a developer, coach and supervisor in startups and nonprofit organisations.
How long have you been in tech?
A couple of years, give or take.
How did you get into tech?
I have always been interested in making and tinkering, but didn’t really get into programming until I started a techy study group while working on my masters degree. We taught fellow students to build basic webpages, how to scan objects and how to use the school’s 3D printer. When I moved to Berlin, I got involved with a couple of open learners’ communities and delved deeper into programming.
How has your your journey in tech been?
My journey is of course influenced by all the different interests and skills I bring with me from the very diverse experiences with art and design and my career in academia. In New York and Berlin I found these incredible communities to learn within. Since moving back to Copenhagen I have been happy to engage with different corners of the tech industry. I really appreciate the way technical skills translate so easily into other spheres of engagement as well, be it politics, activism, education or the arts. I am particularly fond of supporting initiatives that promote more diversity in tech, such as Wonder Coders and many others.
Please share your challenges working in tech.
The biggest challenges are mental. There is so much stuff to learn! I get super impatient and greedy with all the stuff I want to master. Besides curiosity, patience and stubbornness are the most valuable qualities in a software developer!

To continue learning for the rest of my career and build amazing things.

Find supportive communities where you can learn. I strongly believe that learning to code should be a social experience.
